Looking Back, Looking Forward

It’s been a crazy year with a lot of ups and downs. I’m really ready for a new beginning and a better year ahead. My car has been my biggest enemy this year, and it decided last night to give me one last hurrah for the year. So after a year where I’ve replaced the battery, the tires, the rear brakes, the casing on the side mirror, and the engine… last night the drivers side window came unclipped and fell into the door. I live in Michigan, it’s December, and the nearest dealership is 30 minutes away. I’m not looking forward to that chilly drive. So, get your car serviced regularly or it will come back and bite you in the ass. Consider this my public service announcement and biggest lesson learned for 2007.

Knitting wise, I’ve been all over the map this year.

I’ve played with a ton of sock patterns resulting in 18 pair (19 if I finish dad’s today). My mom got 3 pair, I gave 3 pair at Christmas (dad, brother, and sister-in-law) and the most spectacular pair went to my sockapalooza sock pal. The rest are all mine and between those and the few pair I knit in ‘06, I’m down to a very scant number of non-handknit socks in my wardrobe. I have a couple pair of solid black and brown trouser socks and a few pair of athletic socks, but the rest are all knit! I knit simple socks, fancy socks, cabled socks, lace socks, socks at amusement parks, socks in the car, socks at work, and even participated in a crazy mad event that was essentially a multi-round sock race. It’s mostly been my year of socks, and with my sock yarn stash as it is, there are many more years of socks ahead.

I made 5 scarves, including two very nice chevrons. I love my amusement park chevron and wear it constantly. 3 of the 5 scarves were gifts, 2 of them gifted for Christmas. I have several other scarf patterns I want to play with, but they really aren’t my go-to project.

I made my first sweater, an undertaking that was far faster and simpler than I ever expected it to be and something I consider among my biggest accomplishments of the year. Another is in progress and I see many more in my future.

And I made a few other random accessories… a hat, some gloves, a few dishcloths.

It’s also been a year of knitalongs, a year of Ravelry, and a year with NaBloPoMo, and a year that I’ve realized I need to figure out a better strategy for managing those sorts of things if I’m going to participate. It’s been the year that the knitting traveled. I worked on socks in several amusement parks, and my socks got to see some rather coaster geekish things like the walk-back tour at the Voyage at Holiday World, and the brake run of Kentucky Rumbler at Beech Bend Park. One sock even rode the carousel at Kennywood.

I’m not really setting any notable knitting goals this year, I’m planning more on just going with the flow since I tend to do that anyway. I am going to be mindful of the presence of the holidays a little sooner(like say, next week), I am going to try to pare down the number of projects I’m splitting my time between, and I’m finally ready to tackle some lace, but beyond that you might as well stay tuned, because I have no idea what the future holds for me in this craft.

I am working on some other more personal goals though and I’ve begun them a few weeks prior to the new year. My mantra for ‘08 is “What can I do today to improve my health, wealth and home?”

I’ve got some little projects, and some notable ones in the works. The biggest one this year will be finally focusing on getting rid of debt. The money thing has been hanging over my head like a noose, and I’m ready to behave like a mature adult and get it taken care of. In the grand scheme of things, it’s initially a short term cleanup project with some longer term implications and additional goals once the debt is gone. I can have the credit cards gone at the end of the year, and most everything else taken care of in another beyond that, in the meantime, I’m working on establishing some healthier spending habits that should help in the long run. Financial independence in my 30’s is not unreasonable and is well within my reach.

That one trickles into all sort of other projects that will be more of a downscaling than full removal. mostly Knitting from my stash, fewer coaster trips (this is definitely a limited time while buckling down for the debt reduction thing), decluttering my apartment, better time management, and cooking more meals at home. I’m not really making resolutions, just setting some goals and direction and aiming to be in a healthier and happier place at this point next year.

9 days

It’s sort of a clean slate for ‘08 around here. I’m taking next week off, and I’m leaning closer to not going to visit the folks for New Years proper. That means aside from a doctor’s appt on Thursday, I have 9 days home alone by myself with the kitties. I’m thinking back, and in the 8 (as of Jan 15th) years since I’ve been working I’ve always used my vacation time to get out of town. I don’t think I’ve been at home by myself (excluding an occasional illness) for more than a 4-day stretch. I’ve done 9-day road trips solo before, but never just spent the time at home. It’ll be an interesting experience and should be a great time to do some decompression and get the @home-to-do-list into a manageable state.

I have a few at-home projects that have been weighing on me, and I just need to reboot my brain since it kinda checked out for the better part of the last month. I’ll have the holiday knitting wrapped up (dad got an IOU for his second sock, but otherwise the rest was done) this weekend while I decompress. A couple other small UFO’s from earlier in the year will likely be tackled this week and I may frog a couple projects to clean up the needles. I mainly want to spend the week decluttering though. I have a catch-all room that’s full, a holiday closet that’s a mess, and another hall closet that’s not being utilized well. Plus the kitchen just needs a major top-to-bottom overhaul and scrubbing. I’d like to actually have a functional home that’s a little easier to maintain. Since I revamped the bedroom a couple months ago, I know that I’m not that far off from getting it to a workable point. The start of a new year seems like a good time to get to it.

Tucked around all the sweat equity, I’ve got some online reading I’ve let slide and a backlog of about 2 weeks of blog reading to catch up on. If I can get back to the point of feeling “caught up”, I might just get back in the swing of staying on top of things again.

Merry Christmas!

For Christmas I wish you cables and coziness and warmth.

And I give you the pattern to create your own, so you’re recipient can be as happy as mine was.

Inspired Scarf

After making The Yarn Harlot’s Unoriginal Hat, I needed a scarf to go with it. This pattern isn’t exactly like the hat, more of a variation on the theme. Hence inspired; I was inspired by her hat to create this scarf.

The first part of the pattern is based on the more open cable on the hat but with more length to work with, I was able to play with the cables and build a bigger repeat with a little more variation to it. Enjoy!

Yarn: Bulky weight, I used Malabrigo chunky for mine, ~ 3 skeins. (I used the leftovers from the hat and had to break into the 4th skein for the last 4 rows of the scarf.)

Needles: US Size 10 ½, 6.5 mm

Gauge: It’s a scarf, shouldn’t really matter. My finished piece was ~ 5 ½ feet long with 5 repeats + 16 rows.

Instructions:

Row 1: *p3, k4, p3, repeat from * twice more

Uses

For my brother, I present:

The top 10 uses for gigantic handknit socks (on the off chance that they don’t fit)

10. Tissue box cozy

9. Collection vessel for loose change

8. giant bookmarks

7. gift bags

6. Pop bottle cozies

5. thumb-less mittens

4. If you felt them down, they’ll fit mom as really warm slippers

3. detachable pockets

2. unconventional earmuffs

1. New matching Christmas stockings for you and your wife

___________

The socks are done, if you hadn’t noticed. The tissue box photo was my attempt to show scale.

In addition, I finished the cabled scarf for my cousin to match the Unoriginal hat I made her. I’ll have photos and the pattern to share shortly after the holidays. I love how it turned out.

I’ve dropped a couple more projects off the list and now I’m hyper-focusing on finishing up my dad’s socks. I’m on the cuff of the second one with two more knitting days to go. I’m hoping I don’t give him a sock and a half on the needles for Christmas, but I’m prepared for that possibility.

One more done

Posted on December 14th, 2007 in Christmas, chevron scarf, gift by bethtoons || 2 Comments

The Christmas knits are slowly coming off the needles. Last night I finished mom’s scarf gave it a quick soak and hung it to dry which was enough to uncurl it and open up the stitches a little bit. It’s gorgeous; I think she’s going to love it and it should look great with her purple winter coat.

Pattern: The same chevron scarf variation I used for mine this summer

Yarns: Colinette Jitterbug in Marble, Blue Moon Fiber Arts Socks that Rock Lightweight in Scottish Highlands

I ended it early enough that I have plenty of yarn leftover. I doubt I’ll have time before Christmas with the other projects I need to wrap up, but she’ll likely get a matching pair of gloves for her birthday next month.

Lots of photos, I had a fun little interlude between loads of laundry and cleaning tonight playing with the camera around the tree and my snowball candles centerpiece on my coffee table. That said, the apartment is in decent shape now and all set for Mike to arrive tomorrow night.

Did you miss me?

I will say, it’s been nice to step away from the blog for a while after all the daily stuff, but I do still have a bunch of posts whipping around in my head waiting to emerge. Also, in case they got lost in the shuffle, I have a Pay it Forward post and a Christmas Card post just begging for commenters.

Right now though, I’m facing a reality check.

I am making progress, just not as quickly as I’d like. The list has pared down dramatically and I’ve jotted down a zillion projects as potential gifts for later holidays and birthdays since I don’t have time to make all the great gift idea gifts that are popping into my head right now. Mom’s scarf is nearing the end and I should have it finished and blocking tomorrow night. Both pair of man socks still need a mate. And the sari silk scarf hasn’t been touched in a while.

I also made a run to Threadbear this weekend and picked up enough chunky malabrigo for two hat and scarf sets and whipped up a Yarn Harlot Unoriginal Hat so far. I’ve also made some decent progress on sort of a variation on the theme cabled scarf to match. If I like the results, I’ll probably publish the pattern to my blog after gift stress out time. I’m still debating making both sets the same, or doing the second set with a Foliage hat and doing a bulky leafy scarf to match.

The days are counting down quickly though, and my time is spreading thin. I got an awesome early present, my boyfriend is coming to visit this weekend. Fortunately, he gave me more than a week’s notice. Unfortunately, I’m losing a lot of knitting time to making sure my place is clean enough before he gets here.

I did sacrifice some knitting time this weekend to getting my tree up and my other decorations out and I was bit with a baking bug which resulted in a great big pile of cookies for the potluck at work tomorrow. I made sugar cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and pebber nodders.
