Blogiversary

Posted on March 23rd, 2007 in blogiversary, contest by bethtoons ||

I’ve been debating just what to write about today since it’s supposed to be momentous or something.

I’ve mostly used the last year to prove to myself that I’m willing to post somewhat regularly and I won’t be dropping knitting or blogging any time soon. Once I was sure that the habit was good and  established, I’ve been  gradually branching out and letting myself get a little more involved with the community at large I think. Thats also why I waited til now to buy the domain. It doesn’t feel like it’s a waste of money now that I’ve proven that it’ll actually get some use.

This hobby actually goes surprisingly well with that coaster habit I have too. I’m still trying to figure out the easiest way to carry my knitting around the parks with me (I travel light inside the gates), but it’s great for the long road trips and flights that I find myself on frequently. You won’t be seeing me knitting on a roller coaster ever, but I’m not adverse to knitting on the midways or while waiting in line.

I’m starting to comment more on other blogs I read now, where I wasn’t doing that very often before. I might even meet a few of the local-to-my-state knitbloggers when I drag my best friend over to Ann Arbor in another week for the Harlot’s visit.

I’ve definitely expanded my knitting skills in the last year. That’s real easy to do the first year of a hobby though. At this point last year, I think I’d finished a couple scarves and a dishcloth. But I’d definitely qualify myself as somewhere between adventurous beginner and intermediate now even though I haven’t yet tackled the tasks of a sweater or a shawl.

I’m not really sure what drove me into blogging last spring. I was a brand new knitter, I think I’d just started reading blogs around the knitting Olympics. But my timing seems strange too. We were right in the middle of a major family crisis this time last year. I was in the middle of an emotional mess having almost lost my mom 2 weeks before to a fall that resulted in internal bleeding and emergency brain surgery. That’s pretty heavy stuff to deal with. And yet in the midst of all of that I sought refuge by carving out my own little corner of cyberspace with a primary focus that seemed frivolous in comparison.

So, I can’t say for sure what was going through my head at the time. But I’m glad that I set my stake in the ground and have spent the last year establishing the habit of writing something down on a regular basis. So, I’m not going anywhere, and I’m grateful for the slowly budding friendships that this blog has provided me with. I have a knack for finding great communities online and I know that the knitting community online is one of the best. I’m glad to be a part of it.

Ok, enough sappy reminiscent drivel, you all are really just waiting for me to host my first giveaway, right? That’s what I thought. So, comment on this post before April 1st and I’ll select someone who is a knitter and someone who isn’t a knitter (gotta get some of my non-knitting friends to comment here sometime). Make sure to distinguish which group you’re a part of in the comments.

For the knitter, I have a KimiK Sock*tastic Wool Yarn Color Kit in blues and purples. Definitely check out her yarns, the green socks that I made last year were with one of her merino sock yarns. The sock kit is 3 skeins, 2 solids and a coordinating variegate, that total a crazy 525 yards. I’ll probably throw in some other local treats as well.

For the non-knitter, I’ll figure something out, probably something cool from etsy as well as some of those local treats.

So, here’s to another year in blogland! Salut!

Happy Blogiversary you adventurous knitter. Congratulations on keeping with the blog thing. I think I’d get tired of it real quick. Anyhow, fun to see what’s going on over here. See ya on coaster soon.

I don’t know why you won’t knit on coasters. I’ve played cards, read the paper, and enjoyed a warm cup of coffee while riding.

Happy Blogiversary Beth, what an entertaining read! LOL @ your grandma getting in a huff over her flower-free bag! Sibling rivalry must never grow old huh?

Keep up the good work and the knitting, you’ve produced some fantastic stuff!

Wow Bethie, had no idea you had gotten into blogging. Yarn and needles aren’t heavy objects so carrying them around the parks shouldn’t be too much of a hassle and it would definitely help the time go by in line. Plus you’d get a lot more knitting done! Nice socks btw. My cold feet could use a pair, lol.

Speaking of local treats, don’t forget that wine I emailed you about. I could use a bottle for Holiwood Nights ;) See you then!!!

Congrats on the blogversary! I am new to the whole scene of even reading blogs. I have prefered to hang in local cafes with local NW knitters. BUT my friend talked me into the sOCK mADNESS craze,,,, and I am trying to see what this is all about…. the madnes blog I am finding pretty fun. I might have to look into creating my own photo blog after it is over. It is really fun to see the different sock possibilities. :)

Good luck in the contest, and let’s see if my messages goes through…

    Sockergirl - yep , knitter

Happy Bloggy Birthday, Beth! I’m glad you have enjoyed blogging this past year and are finding your way into the knitblog community at large. Hasn’t Sock Madness been such fun? I’m getting the biggest kick out of it. Maybe we will meet up in the finals, eh? I hope you continue to grow and learn in knitting, blogging, roller coasters, and life.

    Sarah (a knitter, of course)

  9. fabienne Says:

  10. Margie Says:

Congrats on your blogiversary AND getting through to the next round. I was working on the heel flap of sock one when I was eliminated. Some people never sleep! I’ve finished sock one and cast on for sock two but I went away for the weekend and forgot the second ball of yarn and the pattern. I like the yarn you chose for the almost Jaywalkers. Maybe a feather and fan pattern would work? I noticed with my Madtini socks that even opne stitch changed the pattern of the yarn. My yarn had a very short repeat, though.

  11. Michelle Says:

    Happy blogiversary!

Your Sock Madness socks look great!

I think one of the coolest things about Sock Madness (aside from the adrenaline rush of competition!) is that I’m discovering blogs I’ve never seen before. Like yours. Looking forward to reading more!

  12. Mamma Says:

Happy blogiversary! I’ve discovered you through Sock Madness and you are a very talented knitter, and writer. to echo Michelle, I love discovering new blogs through the participants of sock madness. Can’t wait to read more.

  13. Tam Says:

Hi! Happy Bloggy birthday! I’m one of your fellow Sock Madness knitters. You mentioned purple yarn?? You mentioned chocolate??? Count me IN. Those are two of my all time most favorite things.

Just FYI, unless you are using some alternate spelling or a play on words that I’m not privy to, the word pursuit is spelled with a “u”. You probably would have noticed this sooner if it was really a mistake but the English teacher in me forces me to point it out anyway. :-)

  14. Nicole Says:

Happy blogiversary! The Sock Madness socks look great.

(I’m a knitter. Not a very good one yet, though.)

  15. amber Says:

Happy blogday. Now when can I count on you to teach me to knit?

p.s. the green/yellow spring socks and in fact very springy and cute.

  16. Ina Says:

Happy blogiversary! I’ve just recently started my own knitting blog, and loving it so far! The web is full of great patterns, and great yarn! Another thing I find really fantastic is that people all over the world can knit together and share their experiences. Greetings from Finland!

    Ina (knitter)

  17. Leanne Says:

Congratulations on your blogiversary. I think knitting, and blogging about it, is a perfect way to get through a time of emotional crisis. It’s what keeps me sane when my life gets crazy. I’ve been knitting since I was young, but I’ve learned more in the past couple of years since I’ve discovered knit blogs than in the rest of my life. It is a wonderful way to share knowledge, and create community.

  18. Theresa Says:

Happy Blogiversary! I totally missed mine, but maybe I’ll celebrate it’s half?

  19. Ed Says:

Kudos to your blog and knitting, looks like you are entertaining yourself and others. I just hope you try what the Rev suggested, riding and knitting. That should be a fun watch.

  20. redman Says:

Hiya Beth, you’ve done some pretyt cool socks, I like the pattern on the ones you did in “a tale of two socks”

    Happy blogiversary!
